William Penn Jr. was the son of William Penn, the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia. He was born on March 14, 1672, in Bristol, England and was a Quaker like his father. William Penn Jr. received his education at Oxford University but did not complete his studies. In 1696, he traveled to Pennsylvania to join his father and take over the management of the province.
However, William Penn Jr. had a difficult time managing the colony. He was not as skilled in financial matters as his father and made poor decisions that led to financial difficulties. Additionally, Penn Jr. was involved in several controversies, including a dispute with Isaac Norris, a prominent figure in the Quaker community.
In 1701, William Penn Sr. transferred ownership of the colony to William Penn Jr. However, due to his troubled management of the province, William Penn Jr. leased it to a group of trustees in 1712.
William Penn Jr. eventually returned to England, where he died on March 21, 1720. He is buried at Jordans Meeting House in Buckinghamshire, England, where many prominent Quakers are buried.
